While driving home my car started burning. I pulled over with smoke pouring out of the engine area and the car just stopped. I opened the hood and there were flames coming up from behind the engine. The fire grew until it engulfed the front of the car. The fire department came and put out the fire. The 2009 matrix was totally destroyed. I noticed no prior warning signs or symptoms.

Vehicle has stalled several times. All instances the vehicle stalls while driving. Problem is random and non-repeatable. I have had the vehicle stall while at various speeds ranging from 15 mph to 55+ mph (on highways or even local roads). Most recent stall was 09/17/2018. Making a right hand turn, vehicle stalled. Turned the ignition off, went to turn back on, stalled again. Turned off, waited for a moment, started the motor and vehicle ran without any further issues for the remainder of the day. In doing reading, I see the engine control modal has been recalled for the Toyota matrix up to and including 2008 models. I believe the recall should be extended to 2009 models. I have also done some reading that there was overlap between production years of 2008/2009 where parts were used from the 2008 models in the 2009 models which furthers my emphasis to expand the recall.

I am the original owner and the car has been using oil like crazy. I replace all 5 qts of oil at least 1.5 times between oil changes. I have been told that other than an engine rebuild I am pretty much out of luck. The car now has appox 185K miles. The use of oil has been an issue since around 75K. I have done a little research and saw a service bulletin, but by the time it was issued my car was outside of the mileage range it covered.

I'm very disappointed with Toyota. My vehicle runs out of oil. Period before 3,000 miles. No "red" oil light. It just runs out of oil. I took it for Toyota oil consumption test and it passed. So I go for a second test. No. the 10 year 150,000 extended warranty is expired. So I am now stuck putting oil in this vehicle weekly until it ultimately fails. It runs rough and I expect it to fail. Shame on ntsb and Toyota for not recalling this motor. I get a 10 year warranty that starts when the vehicle is first used - not when I'm notified. Very shady and unethical. I also have reservations that the test was properly implemented.

I started noticing a knocking in my engine. I reported it to the Toyota service department on 9-9-14. I was told by the Toyota service department( the one that has done all of my scheduled maintenance) " no abnormal sounds heard at this time." In hind sight maybe they didn't hear the noise because she was low on oil and only listend for the noise after the oil change. I was never told that I should check my oil for leakage in between my scheduled maintenance! I checked my oil one day at random after I heard knocking again and she was very low on oil. I took her to Toyota and told them she was consuming oil. They suggested a fuel induction service for which they did on 1-12-17, which didn't fix the problem. On 9-12-17 at her next appointment I reported again the oil usage.outcome; " performed inspection, found slight oil seepage at engine oil pan. PCV system is working. Engine must be burning oil. Pistons and rings would need to be replaced." Big surprise there. I was so naive but I did take her to different Toyota service place for a second opinion. And yes you guessed it another engine oil cleaner service. And suggested piston and rings replaced. It was a mechanic friend that we took her to that kindly did some searching and found that Toyota had issued a tsb on August 11, 2011[1](# fn:1) to dealerships which says: " some 2006-2011 model year vehicles equipped with the 2az-fe engine may exhibit engine oil consumption. The piston assembly has been changed to minimize oil consumption." And that po3O# (cylinder # misfire detected) dtc may also be set as a result of oil consuption" obviously there was there is a design error of the pistons.

Excessive oil consumption. Red oil light comes on when you turn and stop vehicle before manufacturer change interval. Took to Toyota dealership for oil consumption test and the vehicle passed. Toyota fails to provide any technical information about the test such as what oil type used, amounted added, amount burned. This is the second tsb refused by Toyota for this vehicle to get out of safety recall and lawsuits. My first safety complaint was to get tbs for loose computer assisted steering. Toytota refused based on time passed and mileage of vehicle.

While driving, the car stalls. Everything turns off and I'm dead on the street, turnpike or highway. I have taken the car in twice, but Toyota has no idea what is happening. Sometimes it does not happen for a while, and then it will start stalling again. I have taken the car in again after stalling on the pa turnpike. This is a major safety issue. I am stalling on city roads, highways, turnpikes, and I risk an accident or being killed. This is a dangerous issue. I have informed the Toyota car dealership this will be their last time to find the problem and fix it.

2009 Toyota Matrix first problem started stalling suddenly in traffic last year, but now very frequently stalls even on highways at high speeds. No warnings. When stalled all lights comes on in dash, including "check engine" light. Completely turn off ignition and restarting is the only way to fix this issue at that time. After restarting the check engine light goes out. Occurred several times in all sorts of weather, but more frequently in hot summer days. Yesterday stalled 4 times within 90 minutes drive. Restart cleared engine computer dealership had difficult time replicating failure. But, advised replacement of the engine control module at a cost of over $1000. Since this year model not recalled by Toyota yet. I do not know how or where to complain so that Toyota acknowledge that it is a safety issue and fix this at their expense.

Multiple episodes of engine stall without warning. Instrument panel goes black and complete loss of power. A few times it sputtered and bucked before it stalled. Have had it in to Toyota twice now. The first time they were able to replicate the malfunction and said it was a loose fuse. I picked up the car and it stalled again while driving another 4 times. In the middle of a busy intersection with my toddler grandson in the back seat. Another time I was coming out of a dark tunnel with a blind turn doing approx 55mph and only by the grace of god did somebody not plow into the back of me. It could have been deadly. The car is back in the Toyota dealership and has been there for 4 weeks. The service department says they can't perform any repairs if they are unable to replicate the malfunction. I am left wondering if the 2005-2008 recalls for this very issues should indeed be expanded to include the 2009 as well.

On humid mornings, engine occasionally misses on start up then clears. Engine stalled with no warning and almost caused a rear end collision when it suddenly lost power on acceleration onto busy road. Next morning engine would not start until later in day after warming up. It started with extreme miss then cleared. The 08 matrix has an ECM recall for same reason however no notice was received for the 09 model manufactured on 5/08.
