Power steering intermittently goes out for no reason while driving, causing very unsafe situation. Dash warning says service advanctrac and service power steering now. Ford dealer resets the code and then it works fine again until the next time(this time a month later). Ford charges $100 to reset the code each time, then say they can't find a real problem. They suggest to replace a power steering unit for $1500, but they can't guarantee that it will fix the problem. When it happens, it is practically impossible to turn the wheel when car is sitting. Even at highway speeds, it is still very hard to turn. I won't let my wife drive this vehicle any longer. No advance warning when it happens. There is a lot of traffic online about this problem, but the Ford dealer says they have never seen or heard of this problem. The car is only 2 years old.

  • miles
2010 Ford Fusion sel. Customer writes in regards to continued transmission problems. The consumer stated the transmission would slip harshly and hesitate on acceleration. The recall repair did not correct the transmission problems. It was determined that the valve body and solenoid body were defective. Also, one of the tires was leaking air, there was an issue with the traction and brakes. There were noises coming from the front of the vehicle. The steering wheel would not lock into place, the cd player did not work at times, the driver side visor did not stay in place, the gas over flow tube was inoperative, the vehicle would pull hard when the brake was applied. The rear driver's side door had to be slammed extremely hard, in order to close it. The driver's side seat belt was backwards. The passenger side windshield wiper dragged on the windshield and the vehicle would sometimes surge on its own. Each time the consumer went to the dealer about certain problems, she was told no problems were found.

When I started the car a new message stating "service power steering now and service advance autotrac" when I started the engine, a message stated "service power steering now and service advance autotrac" on dashboard. Electrical steering failed and it was hard to turn. Dealer can not fix it. Tried to restart but problem stays. This is a dangerous safety issue and must be investigated by Ford immediately.

I had not had any issues with my car, but I left my house to drive my daughter to tumbling which was 7 miles from my house. I was about 3 miles from my home when a warning sound and the lights on my dashboard stated check power steering. I assumed that I needed power steering. I arrived at tumbling, parked for an hour. When I started the car a new message was on the dash stating service power steering now and service advance autotrac. I put the car in reverse and backed up, but when I turned the steering wheel it was locked, I could barely move the wheel. I was blocking the traffic in the parking lot and had to pull forward and park. I turned the car off and on and received the same message. Therefore I was stranded in the parking lot. We took the car to a Ford service dept. They told us that this is an issue that they have been having with Ford Fusion as well as other Ford but there was no recall. I paid for them to perform a diagnostic test the results were that they would have to replace the steering panel for $1500 and the part was on back order, but first they reset the codes, and the power steering warning was gone the car test drove and drove home fine. The next morning I left to take my daughters to school and the same cycle of events happened I was afraid to turn the car off when I dropped them off at school so that I would not be stranded. I kept the car on and drove the car to the dealership where I purchased the car paid again for a test and was told the same thing. I told them to repair the car. I called Ford co. And they told me that they were not aware of this issue and although I saw numerous complaints on the internet they were not true. Meanwhile my car is ready and I have to come up with 1500 for an issue that Ford knows they are having problems with. I am afraid my car will have problems again, this is a safety issue when it comes to steering.

Power steering went out. Service power steering msg along with service advancetrac msg came up on dash. Took car to dealer next morning( Saturday 10/6/2012) steering still not working and service messages still on dash. Service writer moved car later that day because they did not have a technician look at it. He stated when he moved the car the steering was not working(problem existed). Car sat at dealer until Monday 10/8 they called and said it was working properly and they could not find a problem...they would drive it and see if they could replicate the problem. It is now Wednesday 10/10 and they say they have not been able to duplicate the steering problem. They don't know how to help me.....service manager said Ford will not let them replace parts on a trial and error basis.... before they can replace a part they must be able to confirm it is bad.....this is very dangerous. The car cannot be driven safely if this happens again.

While driving on the interstate at about 55 mph, the vehicle lost all power and shut down with the wrench and check engine lights were on. Steering was difficult and I almost was hit trying to get vehicle off of the road. After several minutes I tried restarting car and it started, so I made it to my destination and it died again. I had to have it towed to Ford. The vehicle was under warranty and they replaced the throttle body assembly. Vehicle still has loss of power issues and Ford has not solved this issue. This is dangerous as vehicle just turns off at highway speed as this part fails.

Upon starting my car in my driveway, a message appeared across the dashboard reading "power steering assist fault" also "service advance trac". I bought this car not even 8 months ago, the mileage being over what a warranty could cover. Twice I was turned away because the vehicle being too "new" the coding could not be detected, reading there was nothing wrong. Clearly with no power steering, and the messages going off...there was something wrong. This is not the first of this exact same complaint I have found online regarding the same year, make and model of this vehicle. It is now sitting at a garage and I am waiting on the verdict. Not to mention I have to pay just to have it diagnosed, I am being told if similar to other problems that sound like this one, I could be looking at anywhere from $800-1500 + for this to be solved. Why will Ford not come out with a recall by now, after all of the similar complaints!? I have always been partial to Ford's and now regret ever making the purchase. Please help out your customers Ford!

Power steering was in a parking lot. It could be steered by man power. Took to Ford garage and was the power steering rack. Was advised it could have been very dangerous if it had happened on the highway at high speed and on curves which we had just done that day.

2010 Ford Fusion steering problem - car pulls to the left or sometimes right. Usually when traveling at lower speeds the steering is terrible, it wants to pull the wheel hard to one side, always happens on uneven road surface - sometimes on even roads - every one of my other cars drive perfect on the same road. Took my company car to the dealer to have it looked at - they replaced all 4 tires and did an alignment - charged my fleet $1,200 and it still does the same thing. Service manager said that it is a characteristic of the car and Ford will not fix it - just live with it. Problem is I am stuck with it for another year and a half...

I have a brand new 2010 Ford Fusion that has approximately 3000 miles on it. I had a bad experience where the power steering suddenly stopped working while pulling my car out of a parking garage. The vehicle console display showed a 'power steering assist failure' message. I pulled my car over to the side with considerable effort and shut the ignition off. After a few minutes wait, I restarted the car and everything was normal. Within a few minutes, a less than a mile traveled, the same failure occurred and the same message was displayed while in a round-about. I again pulled my car over and shut it off. It again restarted and steered fine and I drove immediately to my dealership. The dealership read the code, cleared it and informed me that they could not get the vehicle to reproduce the problem. This is a very scary issue and no components were replaced. I am a prior owner of a Chevrolet cobalt and I am familiar with their recall for the electric assist. My cobalt did not fail, but they replaced the assist motor under recall. I did not realize that the Ford Fusion now has electric assist. Are other Fusion owners having intermittent failures with their steering?
