problem #158

  • 33,000 miles
For the past year my transmission has been shifting hard and I've been told by the dealer that it's normal. I've had service shifter messages pop up and all the lights illuminate red on the shifter. I also have a service 4WD system message and the 4WD is in operable. This vehicle only has 58000 miles on it. These issues have been going on for the past year with no resolution. I feel that I have been sold a lemon.

At about 20K miles, a warning on the display popped up that says, "service shifter" and all of the gear shift lights all lit up. This happened two times, once while the vehicle was in motion and once while it was parked. After those two times, it stopped and didn't happen again until now. The issue has returned at 45K miles and is happening a lot. When it happens while I'm moving, the engine revs up really high. When I'm parked and it happens, I have to turn the vehicle off and back on before I can shift into gear. The dealership has not provided a solution.

The service shifter light keeps coming on. With that..the lights next to the park, drive, neutral and drive letters all turn red. I'm taking it to a dealership this Saturday and I know that it will cost me. I had my two kids in the car 1 and 3 years old when it happened. My car was parked overnight in my garage because it's been raining all week and I didn't want to get out into the rain to let my two kids inside. I drove it about a mile down the road when this problem started. I read that this is a reoccurring problem with this vehicle that a lot of people are having. Some say the problem gets worse like the vehicle shuts down while driving and others say they have to keep paying to have it 'fixed' but the problem with keep happening. Also my vehicle had a misfire on the 2nd cylinder and my vehicle kept jerking two weeks prior to this incident but we also paid to get that 'fixed'. I got this vehicle because I needed something reliable to drive my family around in and it's causing me more headache and now I have to worry if my kids are safe to ride with me in it.

I continue to get error on dash that reads "service shifter" and all of the gears lights, light up. This is the 3rd time I have had the shifter assembly and housing unit replaced. When it happens, the transmission slips and it has gotten stuck in gear on at least 2 occasions. This is a 2016 Jeep Cherokee with 46K miles which I have had for 14 months. The first time it was replaced, was after having the Jeep for 3 months, then happened again about 6 months later, had assembly replaced a second time, and it is currently in the shop for the 3rd time to have it replaced as well as the transmission checked due to it slipping and getting stuck in gears. It typically happens when I first turn the car on, and will reset itself if I turn the car off and then back on again. On 2/28/20, it happened multiple times during the day both when parked as well as when I am driving, which is concerning.

Service shifter code which was diagnosed as needing a new shifter harness and bezel costing me $462 +tax. The message boards show numerous Jeep owners having this issue with brand new Jeep. The Grand Cherokee has issued a recall and I don't understand why the regular Cherokee hasn't yet.

  • 50,000 miles
While driving in cruise, going 70 mph down a highway, my Jeep displayed an error message stating "service shiftier" and all my gears lit up red. This is my 2nd Jeep and the first problem that has occurred since I purchased the vehicle last year. The car is updated with all oil changes and mechanical work and has never given me a scare. Just hours after the message displayed, I took it to be looked at at my local auto zone and even with a second opinion from a worker who used to work for chrysker, they could not see a solution to the problem but advised me that this is a common issue that they have seen 5 other times this year with newer Jeep than mine and some similar to my make and model. I was told that there is no known solution to this issue but to drive with care because this issue could leave me in a situation where I am unable to shift into park or where my gears shift on there own. I am at a total loss as to how to fix this or what is exactly wrong with my vehicle.

I've had this vehicle since end of November 2016. About 1 year into owning the car, a curious note began to pop up reading "service shifter." When this initially happened, I brought my vehicle into Jeep dealership to get it looked at. The response from the dealership was that they couldn't figure out what was making the notification come on and they didn't know what it meant. I ignored this for the time being. In the next year, the message must have shown a minimum of 20 times, in 2020 it has happened 3 times. If the car is turned off and left alone for hours, the message will not appear again. I don't know if anything causes this to happen as I've driven in cold weather, hot weather, off road, smooth road and theres no consistnent behavior that causes the notification of service shifter. Often times the message would appear and the shifting in automatic mode would be less smooth and transition worse than without the message. I have brought the vehicle in multiple times since the first time it showed and each time I get the same response from the dealership; "we don't know what makes this message appear, " "we can't make it appear while its been at the dealership" "we've never seen this message before" "there's nothing we can do". it is concerning that over this 3.5 year period, there is not diagnosis or the issue or any understanding of it. I am submitting this message to ensure there is a database for Jeep owners who received the "service shifter" note.

'service shifter' message keeps popping up on the dash, accompanied by all gear lights in red. Used to stop after powering the vehicle off and on again. I've seen that so many other Jeep Cherokee owners have experienced this. How is this not a recall? so unfair for those of us outside of a warranty.

When I start my car, the dash says 'service shifter' and the ' P R N D' all stay lit. This has happened 3 times in the last month/ month and a half. My Jeep only has 29,000 miles on it. If I restart my car, it seems to go away for the time being.

Transmission shifts unexpectedly into neutral at highway speeds (65 mph). When the gas pedal is depressed the engine revs but the car does not respond as if it is in neutral. The only way to remedy is coming to a complete stop on the freeway and shutting off and restarting the car. Check engine light comes on and I've taken it to dealer and they've stated that the vehicle is no longer under warranty and state that there is a transmission recall affecting the 2014-2015 models, not mine which is a 2016. The local transmission shop looked up the code P0887 (tcm relay), but stated that he would not work on it because other 2016 Jeep Cherokee with the same problem continue coming back with the same problem, even after going so far as to replace the entire transmission and relay. He reset the code, but the same issue happened a day later at freeway speeds (65mph) and I was nearly rear ended as I stalled. Approx 4 days later the same issue happened again at freeway speeds (65 mph). I now drive the vehicle on mainly surface streets and am afraid to drive it because of the close calls I've had with my transmission shifting into neutral at freeway speeds. My model is a 2016 Jeep Cherokee 2wd 2.4L 4-cyl engine.

About 13 months after I first purchased the vehicle, the service shifter warning appeared. I called the dealership I purchased the vehicle from and they instructed me to turn the car off and back on to see if the problem went away. If so, not to worry. The warning appeared again another few thousand miles later and continues to pop up randomly every few thousand miles. The dealership said that it may be a glitch that a software update would fix, but hasn't been fixed with updates so far. I just rolled over 36,000 miles so the vehicle is no longer under warranty and I had the same warning appeared today. I'm concerned that now the issue will require a major hardware replacement that they will recommend now that the vehicle is under warranty. One of many issues with this Jeep. My first and last time buying a Jeep.

About two months ago while driving the car chimed and the message "service shifter" appeared on the screen along with all lights next to shifter to light up red. The vehicle has to turned off and restarted to reset. Now the same thing keeps happening. This never happened before the over the air update. Extremely irritating and scary the first time it happened thank god I wasn't in an accident like other reports have noted. Jeep needs to recall this issue and fix it!!!
