water leaking into interior water leaking into interior

I bought my 2009 Jeep Patriot in May 17 2017 and it started a week later when it rained for the first time, when I called the dealer they told me it must have been because I didn't close the sun roof properly because it had been sitting on the lot for at least a month and it had rained before (sounded like it could be true) here it is September 2017 I HAVE NOT BEEN using the sunroof and it is STILL HAPPENING.

the drains have always been a problem. I clean them with water and very low air pressure. the car is in the shop and asked the shop to clean them and they did and are open. It rained that night at the shops lot and when they pulled the car back into the shop water was poring from the dome lights. the shop looked up what else it could be and found out it could be roof seams under the two black rubber covers that run down right and left of the roof. this is crazy. looking for help. Thanks,SW

sunroof leaks water; creates mold & electrical problems

I am a Michigan resident who purchased a 2009 Jeep Patriot in 2012. My sunroof and dome lights have been leaking/pouring water into my car, despite paying to have the Jeep dealers "blow out" the now "too corroded tubes" more than 4-5 times in the past three years. I'm tired of dealing with the subsequent mold and dangerous electrical issues associated with the leaks; not to mention the awful smell and unsightly stains. This is absolute garbage that Jeep owners are continually dealing with theses issues, even with the newer models. Jeep's reputation is certainly slipping these days. I'm very interested in getting involved in whatever class action suit is available, by the way. So I would love any and all info from anyone who has gotten involved with a suit and/or has had Chrysler/Jeep repair their sunroofs/dome-lights, free of charge, with definitive results.

Leaks out of the dome light. Looking online, this problem is still occurring even in 2015 models. Pretty sad that this can't be fixed on a major production vehicle that has been out several years. I will attempt fixing and hope to return with a solution. I will not grace any dealer with my presence and waste my time.

Awful awful awful! My 2009 Jeep Patriot is pouring water from the overhead lights while I'm driving. It nearly causes me to wreck every time as I'm trying to keep the water from frying out my stereo for the second time or making my business attire look disaster as I'm driving to my job. It's awful. I used towels, open umbrellas, etc. to keep the rain from pouring on me in my car. Now it's so bad it's leaking out of the opener on the side of the car.

I've taken my car in numerous times to different places, tiger point auto body and Navarre Auto care, etc. and no one can 'diagnose' the problem. It's so aggravating to know I've paid faithfully thousands of dollars for this car and never wrecked it or damaged it and now I will have to replace a car that has BAD parts and I'm a teacher! I can't afford this nor handle this issue with a low income job! I called the dealer and they said sorry it's it of warranty and told me I would have to pay 100 MORE dollars just to look at my car. Not to mention the time it takes to deal with this as I'm a graduate student too.

I'm at my breaking point literally and will never buy a Jeep Patriot ever ever again. Someone help me fix this, please!

Seems as if this exact leak is VERY common in Jeep Patriots. And it seems as if Jeep does not want to acknowledge the problem. I'm a little confused as to what to do next. I don't want to spend money to fix this common issue with this specific vehicle. I have been a Jeep owner for YEARS. This is my second Jeep, and I've bought 3 for my kids over the years.

Car has had numerous leaks after rains both big and small. Comes in through map lights and drains down over console. Has shorted out electrical, and also have had to have battery replaced due to this. Engine light comes on after each episode then goes off after a couple days. Have to always have a towel around for wipe-ups. Going to try and clear out the rubber tubes from the sunroof drain pan which we have read are most likely clogging up.

I recently purchased a 2009 Jeep patriot North Edition 4x4, Automatic with the 2.4L Engine.

Car runs great, in showroom condition. We recently had some rain, and this morning when I left for work in the vehicle, water came gushing out of the dome light... and i mean poring out. After that was done I can still see a lot of water build up still inside the light.

Also if I open the sunroof and feel inside its soaked (this might be normal, I am not sure).

I am worried about how much water is above the headliner, and how it will affect my electrical system.

Not to mention if there is a lot of water up there, will rust develop?

When I purchased the vehicle new in 2009, water came in through the map light and on the driver's side pilar after the very first rain. Returned to the dealer who replaced the seal but problem resurfaced during next rain. Went to another dealer who cleared drain lines which seemed to fix the problem, although, for a new vehicle, it seems odd the drains would have been clogged. Did not observe any electrical issues as others have indicated except for the LED flashlight in the cargo area dying. This was replaced but died again (minor issue for me).

Winter of 2012-13 (after 3 year warranty had expried), same leak re-appeared whenever would have precipitation and freezing temperatures followed by a thaw. Since it didn't occur during "normal" precipitation, and being in the south we don't have freezes very often, did not seek repair. Quoted $100-$300 from all dealers in area saying the drain lines cannot simply be blown out with compressed air since the pressure can disconnect them and instead they must remove the head liner and clear them manually.

While traveling in July or 2013, experienced heavy rain while vehicle parked level or facing up on an incline (at home, normally park slightly facing down on an incline) and leaks were much worse with driver's side head liner becoming wet. This indicated the rear drains were the ones clogged. I rarely use the sunroof, have never left it open for an extended period and especially avoid opening it during the heavy pollen seasons of the south, so I don't understand how the drains can get so easily clogged and why they cannot easily be cleared (this seems like a design flaw).

The car began to leak at the rear interior light fixture within the first 3 months of purchase (recorded date is not accurate). Brought the issue to the dealers attention several times (dealer has 8 written records of this issue). The service department was unable to replicate the issue during testing, or obtain a source of the leak, and therefore was unable to fix the leak. The issue was brought up again last week (January 2013) after 5 solid days of rain. The service manager was able to take pictures of the water leak as it was occurring and brought the issue to the attention of the dealership owner. Of course, the car was no longer under warranty. The dealership agreed to attempt to replicate the leak yet again but did not agree to cover the cost of repairs. This time, after running water over it for several hours, they were able to replicate the issue - water was leaking in through the rear interior light (as was reported to them several times). The dealership owner reports that he has contacted Jeep and that Jeep has agreed to pay for the repair, including replacement of the light fixture and the overhead padding. At this time, no electrical issues have resulted as a consequence of the leak. However, the car does smell moldy whenever the doors and windows are shut over night. The current service manager at the dealership has been quite agreeable to work with and has addressed my concerns sufficiently (at least until I see if there "fix" really does work). However, this issue should not have taken over 3 years to correct and since you can do a quick google search and see that this is a re-occurring problem with a large percentage of Jeep Patriots, Jeep should man up and offer a recall that will allow these dealerships to adequately fix the issue. Telling a customer that you cannot replicate the issue in the service department does not take the blame off the dealership or the manufacturer!

rains inside the jeep, sunroof closed. into the service bay for this 6 times since 2009. their fix, is to clean out the drain lines. We have not opened the sunroof in almost 2 years and it still leaks. HOW IS THE DEBRIS GETTING INTO THE DRAIN LINES IF THE DANG THING IS NOT OPEN? Bad seal around the sunroof? blowing up from the street? gremlins that ate after midnight and took a bath? What is the deal? Jeep and the dealership will not give me a good asnwer to this. This jeep is a POS and they will do nothing. Obama motors part 2.

the last time they did try to replace the sunroof and guide assembly and it lasted until this past tuesday. at that time the heir apparant to the dealership said not to park it under any trees. This flippant attitude is totally uncalled for. My wife is about to go all lawyer on this with Jeep and the dealership.

DO NOT EVER BUY ANYTHING WITH A SUNROOF (the dealership says all vehicles with sunroofs have this problem). We have been loyal MOPAR owners for over 20 years and we are about to give up that ship and go to anything but mopar.

We live in a drought area, so heavy rain on the car when it wasn't in a garage or at least covered has been rare up to this point. This problem happened once before, about a year ago, and we figured maybe the sun roof hadn't closed properly, or something. Moving forward to last week, it rained heavily while the car was parked outside. When I drove the car, significant amounts of water leaked through both dome lights, soaking the floor in both areas, as well as the front dash/radio area. Have an appointment with a dealer next week, but we are out of warranty, so we'll see. Will update once we've had it looked at.

Water has leaked thru the dome light several times. I took it to dealer under warranty, they said the roof drain was clogged and blew it out. It has happened at least 5 times since. I took it back again, and they blew out the drains again. Now this last time, all the dash lights flicker and there is a buzzing sound from under the hood. I started and took it for a ride, and when I turned the key off, it kept running. I had to disconnect the battery. I will call the dealer on Monday; but I am sure there is a major electrical short, and warranty is up. It should be covered under warranty since I had it to the dealer at least twice under warranty, and the problem has recurred since.

Update from May 28, 2013: Apparently jeep has come out with a larger diameter roof drain kit that they are keeping a secret unless you open a case with chrysler customer service. After much complaining they replaced the drains, fixed leaks coming from the roof rack mounts, and replaced a seal in the sunroof.. Even though I had brought the car into the dealer twice while under warranty for the same problem they would not repair it for free even though they had misdiagnosed the repair while under warranty. Chrysler is very careful not to admit a design flaw, or any dealer incompetence. I found a Chrysler (not Jeep) dealer that was very helpful and competent, after I refused to return to the incompetent Jeep/Chrysler dealer. They push you to the limit before offering a solution. Not the way I would do business!
